Deciding on the company
After going around and around in my head as to what kind of website I should design, I finally landed upon the idea of a Cinema's website, and my reasons for doing so are threefold.
1. Cinema is something I am very interested in personally, and the idea of designing a business in an old style suited both the town I have situated it in (and also coincidentally know much about), and following a recent and fantastic book by Tim Wu, suited my current knowledge of old cinema. The notion of "Independent films for an independent town" seemed also a perfect fit for this style.
2. Having visited other websites for Cinema's of the same ilk, I found both the web design and social media engagement to be average at best, and so I decided I could improve somewhat. That however, remains to be seen.
3. Cinema and film especially have a huge pool of strong media with which to import into my site. Trailers, posters, imagery, filmography, reviews - the list is endless and the ability to bring all of that into one small film site dedicated to one small town certainly galvanised me into action.
I also decided that basing the fictional organisation in Aberystwyth would give not only a nice slant to the task at hand, but also allow my knowledge of the town to be of some use as well.
After that, it was just a matter of coming up with a name, a slogan and a theme.
After some deliberation, I settled upon the somewhat nondescript and simple sounding “The Picturehouse”. Whilst also the name of a room in the Aberystwyth University Students’ Union, I believed having the fictional business date back to the times of early cinema would avoid any confusion. I also know that the Aberystwyth Arts Centre is a home to many independent films, but will cover that in my “About Us” page.
Onto design...
